SANS 1397 hard hats have a defined service life.

- Suspension: Replace every 3 years or when visible wear, cracking, or deformation is present
- After any impact: Replace the helmet immediately, even if no visible damage is present — the impact energy may have compromised the shell’s structural integrity in ways that are not visible externally

Before fitting a hard hat, check for:
- Cracks, splits, or dents in the shell (especially around the brim)
